Palazzo Strozzi Florence: tickets, prices, opening hours and the current exhibition

At Palazzo Strozzi the ticket pays for the exhibition, not for the palace. That is the difference that throws people who arrive expecting a museum: the piano nobile only opens when there is a show on, and when there is you go in with a ticket costing €15 for a fixed date or €20 for an open date, according to palazzostrozzi.org, while the same admission starts at €21 on the platforms. The hours are the most convenient in the city: every day 10:00–20:00, with Thursday running until 23:00. The courtyard, meanwhile, is free to walk through at any hour of the day.

“Broken: The Power of the Fragment”: the current exhibition

From 25 September 2026 to 24 January 2027 the piano nobile and the courtyard host “Broken: The Power of the Fragment”, built together with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where the exhibition moves from 3 March to 27 June 2027. It is curated by C.D. Dickerson III and Andrew Sears of the National Gallery with Arturo Galansino.

On show are more than eighty works lent by the Metropolitan Museum, the Louvre, the British Museum and the Museo Nacional de Antropología. The thread is the incomplete object: the mutilated statue, the reassembled vase, the ruin, and the moment when the break stops being damage and becomes a form. A work by Mark Manders is installed in the courtyard.

It helps to understand how the Foundation works, because it changes how you plan your visit. The big piano nobile exhibitions follow one another one at a time, and between them the floor stays closed to the public: arrive in the wrong week and only the courtyard is open. The next shows are already announced: “California Dreaming” from 20 March to 25 July 2027 and “Basquiat” from 25 September 2027 to 23 January 2028.

From the autumn the Foundation runs its accessibility programmes alongside the exhibition, among them the “A più voci” route for people with Alzheimer’s and their companions.

Palazzo Strozzi exhibition tickets: what it really costs

The difference between €15 and €20 is exactly this: the open date is only for people who do not yet know which day they will be in Florence. If the hotel is already booked, those extra €5 buy you nothing. And if you are under thirty, the €5 Thursday evening ticket is the best price the city offers on an exhibition of this level.

On the platforms the exhibition ticket costs €21 on Tiqets and about the same on GetYourGuide at the time of checking: €6 more than the official fixed-date price. In exchange you get instant availability, confirmation on your phone and — on GetYourGuide, which as a rule applies free cancellation up to 24 hours before — the option to cancel, which the official ticket never allows.

Carta del Docente and Carta della Cultura/Merito are accepted. There is no discount for Florence residents.

Opening hours, the long Thursday and last entry

The palace is open every day from 10:00 to 20:00, with Thursday until 23:00. Last entry is one hour before closing: 19:00 on ordinary days, 22:00 on Thursday. The physical ticket desk is in the courtyard and closes at 19:00, or 22:00 on Thursday.

The detail that changes an itinerary is a different one: Palazzo Strozzi has no weekly closing day. On Monday, when the Uffizi, the Accademia Gallery, the Bargello and the Medici Chapels all shut at once, you walk in here as normal. The same goes for Thursday afternoon, when Palazzo Vecchio pulls the shutters down at 14:00 and Museo Novecento stays closed all day: that is precisely the evening Strozzi keeps going until 23:00.

Thursday evening is also the most pleasant slot of all: the palace is lit, the flow of visitors is slower than in mid-afternoon, and the courtyard ticket desk stays open until 22:00 for anyone who decides at the last minute.

How to book: Vivaticket, the desk and the platforms

The official channel is Vivaticket, at palazzostrozzi.vivaticket.it. You choose the exhibition, then the day and time slot, then the rate; the ticket arrives by email. A date change costs €2 and must be requested before the booked date; no refunds are offered, on any rate. On single tickets the Foundation publishes no service fee: the only stated booking fee is €1 per person on group rates.

Anyone who prefers to talk to a person can call +39 055 2645155, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00, or write to the booking office. Booking is compulsory for groups of five and up, at €12 plus a €1 fee; a Foundation guide costs €100 per group, maximum twenty people, on top of the tickets.

There is no need to book weeks ahead as there is for the Dome at the Duomo or for the Vasari Corridor: the slots here are generous and the exhibition runs for four months. Book ahead only for weekends and the Christmas holidays, or if you are coming as a group. Otherwise the desk in the courtyard works perfectly well.

Why there is no free Sunday here

Palazzo Strozzi is a private Renaissance palace, built for a family of bankers who were rivals of the Medici, and today it is run by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, a private body. It is not a state museum like the Uffizi or the Accademia Gallery, and it is not a civic museum like Palazzo Vecchio.

The practical consequence is blunt: no free first Sunday of the month, because #domenicalmuseo applies only to state museums; no Domenica Metropolitana, which covers the civic museums and Palazzo Medici Riccardi; no €2 reduced rate for EU citizens aged 18–25. Even the free entry for under 18s that state museums offer does not exist here: from 6 to 18 you pay €5.

Courtyard, Project Space and Strozzina: what you see without a ticket

The courtyard is free to enter from 9:00 to 20:00, and until 23:00 on Thursday: it is a public space to all intents and purposes, you walk in from Piazza Strozzi and stay as long as you like. During “Broken” it holds the Mark Manders installation, so part of the exhibition is visible even to those who do not pay.

The Project Space is free too, set up in a former shop and reached from the courtyard: small shows and projects by contemporary artists that change faster than the piano nobile exhibitions.

The Strozzina, the basement floor historically used for contemporary art, is not part of “Broken”: the exhibition listing names only the courtyard and the piano nobile as venues, and the name Strozzina no longer appears on the Foundation’s current pages. Do not assume your exhibition ticket will get you down there.

How long it takes and where it fits in the day

The official audio guide runs about an hour: that is the most reliable measure of the real duration. The route is on one floor, linear, with no stairs to climb and no internal capacity limits. A good hour is enough; an hour and a half if you read every caption or if the show grabs you.

That makes it the perfect visit to tack onto another: a morning at the Uffizi and Palazzo Strozzi in the late afternoon, or Thursday evening after finishing the day at the Mercato Centrale.
