Luggage storage in Florence: prices, opening hours, booking and museum bag rules

In Florence, luggage storage is not a comfort, it is an entry requirement. The official left luggage office at the station opens at 7:00 and starts at €6; private storage points in the centre cost €5–7 a day per case; the Duomo cloakroom is free but compulsory. And at the Accademia Gallery, where the David stands, you will not get in with a wheeled case: the museum states that it has no cloakroom.

The official left luggage office at the station: KiPoint

It is run by KiPoint, part of Grandi Stazioni, and presents itself as the only official left luggage office at Firenze Santa Maria Novella. It is inside the station, on the ground floor along platform 16, signed in blue; there is a second entrance from via Valfonda.

The advantage is not the price, it is the position: if you arrive and leave by train you do not walk an extra metre. If your accommodation is in the Oltrarno, on the other hand, going back to the station twice costs more time than you save.

Private storage and partner shop networks

In recent years the networks that turn bars, newsagents and hotels into drop-off points have covered the whole centre. The mechanism is always the same: you book online, they give you an address and a code, you leave the bag and pay a daily rate regardless of its size.

The honest range to keep in mind is €5–7 a day per case in the centre. The “from €1.95” figures are loss-leaders tied to small bags or promotions: when you turn up with two big cases, the bill is the one in the first column.

Booking online matters above all at weekends and on public holidays, when the lockers fill up, and for having insurance and support included in the booking.

Automatic lockers or a partner shop: what changes

These are two different services that cost roughly the same, and the choice depends on how rigid you are about timing.

Automatic locker. You open and close it with a code, nobody touches your bag, and access is often possible over wider hours. In exchange the locker size is fixed: a large wheeled case may not fit, and two bags in the same compartment almost never will.

Partner shop. You leave the case at the counter of a bar, a newsagent or a hotel reception. No size limit, a flat price per bag, but you depend on that business’s opening hours and on any unexpected closures. Always check the afternoon reopening time: some places close for three hours at lunch.

Rule of thumb. Large or awkward bag, go for a partner shop. Backpack, holdall or two small bags, a locker costs less and does not tie you to counter hours.

The free and compulsory Duomo cloakroom

This is the rule that wrecks the most visits. To climb Brunelleschi’s Dome or to enter the Baptistery, the Bell Tower and the Museo dell’Opera, bags over the permitted size must be left before your visiting time at the cloakroom at Piazza Duomo 38/r, next to the Museo dell’Opera.

The service is free and included in the ticket, open every day 7:30–20:15. It is not optional: anyone turning up with a big backpack at their Dome slot is sent back, and the tolerance on lateness is five minutes. Museum bag rules, museum by museum

The point to grasp is that the measurements are not advice: there is a metal detector at security and the staff judge sizes by eye. And the difference between the two extremes matters: at the Uffizi you deposit the case and go in, at the Accademia the cloakroom does not exist and with a cabin bag they will not let you past at all. There is also a difference in consequences worth remembering. At the Uffizi and the Bargello the cloakroom exists: at worst you lose ten more minutes in a queue. At the Accademia it does not, and the staff have nowhere to put your suitcase: you stay outside with a timed ticket already paid for and non-refundable. It is the only museum in the city where a mistake about luggage means a lost visit.

Departure day

The pattern that almost always works: check out by 10, bags into storage, one last visit, collection and train. With two conditions.

Choose the storage point by your departure station, not by your hotel. If you leave from Santa Maria Novella, storage inside the station saves crossing the centre twice with cases. If you leave by airport bus or by tram, a point near the stop is worth the two euros of difference.

Check the closing time before you drop the bag. The station office closes at 21:00; partner shops keep their own hours, often shorter on Sundays. An evening train and a storage point that closes at 19:00 are an expensive combination.

Security, insurance and what never to leave behind

Automatic lockers and partner shops generally include insurance cover and dedicated support with the booking; the station office is a staffed service. Those are reasonable standards for a case full of clothes.

They are not sufficient standards for a passport, a wallet, essential medicines, a laptop or a camera: those stay on you, always. And photograph the bag and the receipt with your phone before you hand it over: if something goes wrong, that is where a claim starts.

What a day with two suitcases really costs

Two people, two cases, arriving at 9:30 and a train at 18:00. At the station, on KiPoint’s daily rate, that is about €20 for two. At a partner shop in the centre, on the flat daily rate, it is between €10 and €14.

The difference, about ten euros, is worth the convenience only if your route really passes the station. The sums change once you add museum entries: with an afternoon at the Uffizi and the Dome in the morning, the free Duomo deposit already covers half the day and you only need one paid drop-off.
